Tech neck: why it happens and what helps
Forward head posture is a structural problem, not a willpower problem. Here's the mechanics — and what actually changes it.
The load problem
Your head weighs roughly 10–12 pounds when it sits balanced over your shoulders. Tip it forward and the effective load on the muscles and discs of your neck climbs quickly — which is why an afternoon of looking down at a screen leaves your upper back aching even though you never lifted anything.
Do that for years and soft tissue adapts. The muscles at the front of the neck shorten, the ones in the back stay in a constant low-grade contraction, and the normal forward curve of the neck flattens or reverses.
Symptoms that trace back to it
- Aching at the base of the skull and between the shoulder blades
- Tension headaches that build through the day
- Numbness or tingling into the arm or hand
- Jaw tension and disturbed sleep
Why stretching alone stalls out
Stretching feels good because it temporarily reduces muscle tone. It does not change the curve of your neck. If the structure has adapted, relief lasts hours — then you're back where you started.
Structural change requires sustained, specific loading in the opposite direction of the adaptation. That's what mirror-image adjusting, traction, and corrective exercise in a CBP® plan are designed to do.
Three things worth doing today
- Raise your monitor so the top of the screen is at eye level; put your phone at chest height instead of your lap
- Break up static posture every 30 minutes — even 20 seconds of standing and looking up resets the load
- Get measured. If your curve has changed, generic advice won't be enough on its own
