Decompression

What is spinal decompression — and does it work?

The mechanics behind computer-guided decompression, who it helps, and what the research says.

What it actually is

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical therapy that uses a computer-guided table to apply gentle, precisely calibrated traction to the spine. The pull cycles on and off in a pattern designed to keep your muscles relaxed — which is what separates it from old-fashioned traction, where constant force often triggers muscle guarding.

The goal is to create negative pressure inside the disc. That vacuum effect does two things: it helps pull bulged or herniated disc material back toward center, and it draws fluid, oxygen, and nutrients into the disc so it can rehydrate and heal.

Who it tends to help most

  • Disc bulges and herniations confirmed on MRI or x-ray
  • Sciatica and radiating leg or arm pain
  • Pinched nerves causing numbness or tingling
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • People told they need injections or surgery who want a conservative option first

Does it work?

For the right candidate, the evidence and clinical results are strong — which is why the candidacy exam matters so much. Decompression is not a cure-all: it works when the pain is genuinely disc-driven, and it works best as part of a plan that also corrects the spinal mechanics that overloaded the disc in the first place.

That's how we use it at Elevation Spine Center — integrated with Chiropractic BioPhysics® corrective care, with objective re-measurement so you can see the change, not just hope for it.

What a session feels like

Most patients describe it as a gentle, sustained stretch — many fall asleep during sessions. There's no popping, cracking, or forceful manipulation, and no downtime afterward. A typical protocol runs 12 to 24 sessions over 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the disc injury.

If you're in Bend or Central Oregon and wondering whether your disc pain is a fit, the fastest way to find out is a candidacy exam — call (541) 480-0518 or book through our spinal decompression page.
